Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y can be a backup battery for your house

Tesla is expanding its Powershare Home Backup feature to Model 3 and Model Y owners, allowing their EV batteries to serve as home backup power during outages—previously limited to the Cybertruck. The feature currently supports Powerwall 3, with Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus compatibility coming soon, and can reportedly extend backup power to over two days.

Background

Bidirectional charging technology, also known as vehicle-to-home (V2H) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G), allows EVs to discharge power back to homes or the grid. Tesla has been piloting this feature with the Cybertruck, and now expanding it to its most popular models.
