The feds are looking into reports of Tesla’s robotaxis speeding through school zones

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation is evaluating allegations that Tesla's automated driving system on its ~1,000 robotaxis exceeds posted speed limits in active school zones. Waymo has faced similar scrutiny over safety incidents involving school zones and pedestrian collisions.

Background

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened a data evaluation report (DP) on September 23, 2026, into MY 2026 Tesla Robotaxis (Model Y and Cybercab) with ADS engaged. This is part of ongoing federal scrutiny of autonomous vehicle safety as deployments scale.
