The forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)

A developer documents the challenges of booting Linux on Apple M4 Mac mini, which introduces SPTM (Secure Page Table Monitor) — a new security feature not present in prior Apple Silicon generations. The M4's locked registers and enhanced security hardening make previous M1-M3 bringup approaches via m1n1 hypervisor insufficient, requiring significant modifications.

Background

Asahi Linux is an ongoing project to port Linux to Apple Silicon Macs, previously successful on M1-M3 but facing new hurdles with M4's enhanced security architecture.
