The Move to Python 3 Begins

EVE Online begins migrating its codebase from Python 2.7 to Python 3 as part of the EVE Evolved initiative, ending a 16-year run on Stackless Python that dates back to 2010. Testing has already started on the Singularity server, with the goal of making the transition invisible to players while enabling better tooling and future features.

Background

EVE Online launched in 2003 using Stackless Python, a specialized version optimized for handling thousands of concurrent players. The game has remained on Python 2.7 since 2010, making this one of the longest-running Python 2 codebases in active production.
