The Netherlands is building its own Linux OS to break free from Microsoft

The Dutch government is developing its own Linux-based operating system built on NixOS to achieve digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on US tech like Microsoft. The DAWO project aims to provide government and public institutions with a sovereign IT infrastructure including custom OS, productivity tools, and cloud services.

Background

European countries have been increasingly pursuing digital sovereignty initiatives to reduce dependence on US tech giants. NixOS, originally created by Dutch developer Eelco Dolstra in 2003, has gained attention for its functional package management approach.
