Meta failed to detect and remove 332 ads this year promoting AI nudify apps that digitally altered real children's photos into CSAM content, including images of a young European royal and a preteen Instagram influencer. The Tech Transparency Project investigation found the ads, mostly promoting Chinese-made apps, used graphic captions to lure users into creating child sexual abuse material.
Background
Meta has faced ongoing scrutiny over its ad moderation systems and their ability to detect harmful content, particularly AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The Justice Department has clarified that AI-generated CSAM carries the same legal weight as traditional child pornography.
