The Tor Project has launched a beta version of Tor VPN for Android, extending its privacy protections beyond the browser to individual apps. Unlike commercial VPNs, each app gets its own independent Tor circuit, reducing cross-app tracking. The primary use case emerging from early adoption is unblocking internet access in censored regions.
Background
The Tor Project is best known for its anonymous browsing network and Tor Browser. This marks their first foray into device-level network protection on mobile platforms, aiming to bring Tor's privacy model to all apps on a user's device.
