Verizon sent man a refurbished phone with MDM, then deleted his data remotely

Verizon sent a customer a refurbished Samsung phone that still had Mobile Device Management (MDM) software installed, allowing the company to remotely wipe the device and delete the customer's personal data. The phone was reportedly a former store demo unit that wasn't properly reset before being sent out. Verizon has acknowledged the issue and is working with the customer, but hasn't provided details on how the error occurred or what measures will prevent future incidents.

Background

Mobile Device Management (MDM) software is commonly used by companies to manage and secure corporate devices, allowing IT departments to remotely control, monitor, and wipe devices if necessary. When devices are refurbished for consumer use, all MDM software should be completely removed to protect user privacy.
