Vim Classic is a long-term support fork of Vim 8.x, maintained entirely by humans without generative AI assistance. The first release, Vim Classic 8.3.0, was announced on June 2, 2026, aimed at providing a stable and dependable editor as an alternative to mainstream Vim development.
Background
Vim has been the dominant terminal-based text editor since its creation by Bram Moolenaar. As AI-assisted development becomes more common, this fork distinguishes itself by explicitly avoiding generative AI tools in its maintenance.
