What the heck is /pkg?

The article investigates a mysterious /pkg directory that appeared in macOS 27.0, which added /pkg/env/global/bin to the system PATH via a new file in /etc/paths.d. While its exact purpose remains unknown, the author speculates it could be part of an upcoming Apple package management system, especially given the directory structure (env, etc, inv, var) and Apple's recent acquisition of Swift Package.

Background

macOS has used path_helper to manage PATH entries since 10.5, reading from /etc/paths and /etc/paths.d. Apple has occasionally added entries for specific utilities over the years.
